Sunset Key is a 27-acre residential neighborhood and resort island in the city of Key West, Florida, United States. It is located about 500 yards off the northwest coast of the island of Key West. The island is privately held among its residents, one of which is the Key West Westin which operates a small number of guest cottages. The island is accessible only by a shuttle boat that runs from the Westin Marina out to the island. The island consists of a total of 48 single-family homes and 21 vacant lots, all of which are valued at over $1.5 million. Its closest neighbor is Wisteria Island, about 200 yards north.
The following 3 minute time lapse of Sunset Key took hours to capture, days to compile together, and weeks to arrange and edit. It took over 1000 still images to seam together, each of which had to be individually color correct, tweaked, and then individually rendered out as oil paint images.
I choose to use 2 different soundtracks that would enhance the visual imagery of the birthing of an island in the Florida Keys. The first represents an angelic voice summing a new birth and the other represents the sound of a beating heart, not to mention having the sounds of a key unlocking locks.
All images were taken on my birthday, 8/8, which played a significant role in the inspiration to create. The images were captured off the balcony of the hotel I was staying during my trip to Key West that faced a spectacular view of Sunset Key. During several hours of the day I set up my camera on a tripod on interval mode to capture a series of morning, noon, and evening sequence images.
